The Importance of Specificity

My first boxing coach was Willie Toweel. He was number one contender for the world lightweight belt back in the fifties. The great Rocky Marciano once described him as “The White Sugar Ray Robinson.”


He was a great boxing trainer in many ways but he was terrified that weight training would make us slow and stiff. In fact, he was convinced that if I even picked up some heavy weights I’d bulk up and be unable to box.


He wasn’t alone in his opinions of weight training but fortunately most good trainers now recognize the importance of a well designed strength and conditioning program.


Note that I say well designed!


Now, this is going to cause some real controversy, particularly as some of my good friends are bodybuilders, but here goes …..


the absolute last person you should ask for strength training advice for the striking arts is a bodybuilder!
